New RAL quality mark for post-consumer recycled polyethylene

RAL-GZ 702

RAL-GZ 702 quality mark

The RAL Quality Assurance Association for ‘Films, Bags and Carrier Bags made from Recycled Polyethylene’ has introduced the new RAL-GZ-702 ‘Post-Consumer Recycled Polyethylene’ quality mark. This certificate confirms that the tested carrier bags are made from at least 85% high-quality recycled polyethylene and are equivalent to products made from virgin materials in terms of strength and reusability.

All stages of production – from sorting and cleaning the collected plastics to processing them into granulate and manufacturing the films and bags – are subject to strict quality controls. Regular testing in the company's own laboratory also ensures that the packaging is safe for contact with food, provided that the packaged goods are washed or peeled before consumption.

The introduction of the quality mark makes an important contribution to reducing plastic waste, lowering CO2 emissions and conserving valuable resources. At the same time, RAL's clear quality and recycling requirements create a reliable basis for manufacturers of environmentally friendly reusable solutions and strengthen their market position.

Particularly noteworthy is the compatibility with a closed recycling loop: at the end of their useful life, the bags can be recycled again. Supplementary specifications for industrial films and bags will be published shortly to further expand the range of certified recycled products. RAL is thus setting an important milestone on the road to a circular plastics economy.

Ugra Swisstesting AG is the authorised testing laboratory of the Quality Association for Films, Bags and Carriers made from Recycled Polyethylene and stands for many years of expertise in the material testing of flexible packaging.
