Polyethylene (PE) is the most commonly used plastic, accounting for about 30% of the total. Polyethylene is a semi-crystalline and non-polar thermoplastic and is mainly used for films and packaging such as refuse sacks and carrier bags and as PE powder for coating textiles or paper.
Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) is a thermoplastic from the polyester family produced by polycondensation. PET has a wide range of applications and is used, among other things, for the production of plastic bottles (PET bottles), films and textile fibres. Areas of application for PET are, for example, packaging films for aroma-proof packaging and furniture films.
Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) is a plastic whose properties are significantly influenced by the type and proportion of plasticizer and filler. Adhesive-coated PVC films are used, for example, for digital printing and as cutting films. They are used in advertising technology, for example, for the production of outdoor lettering and full vehicle wrapping.
Polypropylene is the second most important plastic. Although polypropylene is chemically relatively similar to PE, it is much harder, stronger and has a higher thermal load capacity. More than one third of synthetic fibres are produced on the basis of PP. Important areas of application are packaging films and rigid packaging.
